Azelaic Acid (10%–15%)
Retinol
How to Layer These Actives in Your Routine
Retinol
Apply first to clean, dry skin. Operates at pH 5.5–6.5.
Allows cutaneous acid mantle to equilibrate before the next step.
Azelaic Acid (10%–15%)
Layer over the initial active. Operates at pH 4–5.5.
Biochemical Mechanism & Pharmacology
Azelaic Acid and Retinol act on distinct, complementary pathogenic pathways. Retinol normalizes follicular desquamation and upregulates collagen, while Azelaic Acid suppresses cutaneous inflammation (IL-1, IL-6) and selectively inhibits hyperactive melanocytes. When layered with barrier support, this combination is unmatched for adult acne, rosacea, and post-inflammatory erythema (PIE).
Azelaic acid formulations (pH 4.0–5.5) are well tolerated alongside retinoids. Apply the lighter vehicle first, or apply Azelaic Acid in the AM and your retinoid in the PM for sensitive skin.
