Can you use Bakuchiol during pregnancy?

⚠️Medical Deferral Notice

Discuss with your obstetrician before use due to limited published gestational toxicity data. Cosmetic classifications are formulation flags to discuss with your healthcare provider, not medical clearance.

Clinical Summary

A popular plant-based retinol alternative. While chemically unrelated to vitamin A, clinical pregnancy trials are lacking.

Pharmacological Mechanism & Teratogenic Context

Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol derived from the babchi plant. It induces similar collagen-stimulating gene expressions to retinol without binding RAR receptors. However, because comprehensive human reproductive safety studies are absent, cautious obstetricians prefer proven actives like azelaic or glycolic acid.
