Can you use Kojic Acid during pregnancy?

⚠️Medical Deferral Notice

Limit to localized low-dose preparations (<1%) or substitute with azelaic acid. Cosmetic classifications are formulation flags to discuss with your healthcare provider, not medical clearance.

Clinical Summary

A fungal fermentation metabolite that chelates copper in tyrosinase. Use cautiously and avoid high concentrations.

Pharmacological Mechanism & Teratogenic Context

Kojic acid inhibits tyrosinase activity by chelating the essential copper atom. In high animal doses, kojic acid has shown potential thyroid and liver metabolism alterations. EU SCCS guidelines set safe limits at 1%. Obstetricians generally prefer safer brighteners like vitamin C and azelaic acid.
