CLINICAL MECHANISM DOSSIER

Epidermal Dehydration & Tightness

A temporary condition where the stratum corneum lacks adequate water content, leading to superficial micro-creasing, tight sensation, and dull light reflection.

UNDERLYING PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

Biological Mechanism

Dehydration is distinct from dry skin (which lacks sebum lipids). Dehydrated skin lacks aqueous intracellular water and natural moisturizing factors (amino acids, PCA, urea, lactate). Corneocytes shrink and curl at the edges, disrupting uniform desquamation.

FIRST-LINE EVIDENCE

Primary Recommended Actives

Hyaluronic Acid & Polyols

ROLE: Multi-Depth Humectant
Ingredient profile →

Low-molecular weight fragments penetrate superficial layers; high-molecular weight polymers hold water on the surface.

Ceramides & Lipids

ROLE: Occlusive Moisture Seal
Ingredient profile →

Prevents humectant-bound moisture from evaporating through transepidermal water loss.

COMPLEMENTARY MODALITIES

Secondary & Supporting Actives

Centella & Ectoin

Profile →
Cellular Hydration Shell

Ectoin forms water clusters around cell membrane proteins, defending against osmotic stress.

CONTRAINDICATIONS & PITFALLS

Ingredients & Approaches to Avoid

Denatured Alcohol (Alcohol Denat) in high placement
Rapidly volatilizes surface water and extracts protective intercellular lipids.
Applying hyaluronic acid in arid environments without moisturizer
In low relative humidity (<30%), un-occluded humectants draw water upward from the dermis into ambient air.
CADENCE PROTOCOL

AM & PM Application Strategy

MORNING (AM)

Photoprotection & Defense

Hydration stacking: Apply watery humectants to damp skin immediately followed by ceramide emulsion and sunscreen.

EVENING (PM)

Targeted Cellular Repair

Overnight seal: Humectant essence + Barrier cream containing ceramides and squalane.

COMMON INQUIRIES

Frequently Asked Questions

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes. Skin can produce excess sebum while simultaneously lacking intercellular water in the stratum corneum.
