Can you use Adapalene (Differin) during pregnancy?
⚠️Medical Deferral Notice
Suspend use during pregnancy. Confirm alternative acne regimens with your doctor. Cosmetic classifications are formulation flags to discuss with your healthcare provider, not medical clearance.
Clinical Summary
A third-generation topical retinoid selectively targeting RAR-beta and RAR-gamma. Suspended throughout pregnancy.
Pharmacological Mechanism & Teratogenic Context
Although adapalene exhibits low systemic absorption through intact human skin (<0.25 ng/mL in serum), animal organogenesis studies with related naphthoic acid derivatives demonstrate embryotoxicity at elevated systemic levels. Obstetric consensus applies the precautionary principle to all synthetic retinoids.
