Malassezia species are lipid-dependent, dimorphic fungal yeasts that naturally colonize the human infundibulum. Because they lack fatty acid synthase enzymes, they secrete extracellular lipases to cleave external triglycerides containing carbon-chain lengths between C11 and C24. Exogenous lipids in this chain range fuel explosive yeast proliferation, prompting follicular inflammation and monomorphic itchy papulopustules.
