Biological Mechanism of Irritation
Anionic surfactants with small hydrophilic headgroups penetrate deep into the stratum corneum. Below and near their critical micelle concentration, monomeric surfactant molecules insert into the intercellular lipid lamellae, solubilizing ceramides and cholesterol. Simultaneously, they bind electrostatically to keratin filaments, causing protein denaturation, cellular swelling, and chronic barrier breakdown.
